On Tuesday, October 28, the Alberta Teachers’ Association announced that teachers will comply with Bill 2 and return to work. The ATA further indicated that it is not calling for any additional labour action, such as work-to-rule.
Following these announcements, the Alberta Federation of Labour held a press conference and confirmed that the labour movement is not currently proceeding with a general strike. Instead, unions across the province are carefully evaluating all available options in response to the government’s unprecedented use of the notwithstanding clause – an action that threatens core democratic freedoms.
While the possibility of a general strike has not been ruled out, such action is not currently imminent.
Local 38 remains committed to keeping members informed and engaged as events continue to unfold.
